The first LNG cargo from the 25-year LNG SPA between CPC Corporation, Taiwan (“CPC”) and Cheniere Energy (“Cheniere”), the largest exporter of US LNG, has arrived in Taiwan today (10/01/2021) on the Fuji LNG vessel for discharging at the Taichung LNG Terminal. Under the SPA, which was signed back in August 11th, 2018, Cheniere will supply 2 mtpa of LNG (approximately 30 shipments annually) to CPC starting 2021 to 2045.
Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG Facility located in Louisiana, USA, is currently the largest LNG export facility in the United States. It has five operational production trains, with a total production capacity of approximately 25 mtpa. A sixth train is under construction and, when completed in 2022, will raise the total production capacity of the Sabine Pass LNG Facility to approximately 30 mtpa. Cheniere also owns and operates the Corpus Christi LNG Facility located in Texas, which has two operational production trains and a third train in the late stage of commissioning with a total production capacity of approximately 15 mtpa. The LNG cargo delivered on Fuji LNG today was sourced from Cheniere’s Corpus Christi LNG Facility.
In line with the Taiwan government's new energy policy of "creating a green energy and low-carbon environment, and gradually moving towards a non-nuclear homeland", CPC fully supplies the new demand in the domestic natural gas market and actively explores the supply sources of imported LNG. Australia, Qatar and the United States are the three major LNG exporting countries. Today, the first LNG cargo under the long term LNG SPA between CPC and Cheniere arrived in Taiwan. In addition to strengthening the long-term cooperation between both Taiwan’s CPC and United States’ Cheniere, it also remarked a new milestone for CPC’s expansion of diversification of LNG for Taiwan.
CPC stated that in response to the goal of energy transition, to mandate a 50% share for natural gas in fueling in Taiwan’s total electricity generation by 2025, it has long been committed to the plan of “diversification of gas supply sources and layout” in order to ensure a stable supply of natural gas for the domestic demand.
