CPC: Over 60 years of progress¡K
Established in Shanghai on June 1st, 1946 Chinese Petroleum Corp. (CPC) was funded and operated by the government under the direction of the Resources Committee (the forerunner of the State-Owned Enterprise Commission, Ministry of Economic Affairs). In 1949 CPC followed the government in relocating to Taiwan, setting up its headquarters in Taipei under the direction of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). Its service facilities cover the whole nation and its operations today include the import, exploration, development, refining, transport, marketing and sale of petroleum and natural gas as well as the production and supply of petroleum products and petrochemicals.
¡Kand still moving with the times
In February 2007 the CPC Board of Directors approved changing the name of the company from Chinese Petroleum Corporation to CPC Corporation, Taiwan while retaining its "Chinese Petroleum" name in Chinese, its logo and its "CPC" abbreviation in English. The objectives of this change were to help expand the firm ¡¦s international business presence, reinforce the principle of keeping its roots in Taiwan and enhance the valued reputation built up over decades. CPC ¡¦s total capital stands at NT$130.1 billion (about USD4.2 bn) and its total revenues in 2011 amounted to NT$1.03 trillion (about USD34.3 bn).
CPC is an economic growth engine¡K
During the more than 60 years since its establishment, CPC has ably fulfilled its mission of providing a stable supply of petroleum products and stimulating the development of petrochemical ¡Vbased industries - enabling Taiwan ¡¦s economy to achieve soaring growth and the island ¡¦s people to enjoy growing prosperity. This accomplishment has won general approbation both at home and abroad.
¡Kwith both internal and external dynamism
Faced with the opening of Taiwan ¡¦s market for petroleum products, CPC has consolidated and enhanced its operational and competitive advantages, and through organizational re-engineering, human resource rationalization, and production-cost reduction. At the same time it has vigorously sought opportunities to collaborate with other major international oil companies both upstream and downstream in the development of exploration, petrochemical product development and marketing channels with the aim of expanding its business scope and international market presence. In this way CPC aims to be a competitive international energy company with clean, safe and sustainable operations providing the people of Taiwan with high-efficiency, high-quality energy products.
CPC has an active CSR policy¡K
As a government-owned company, even as it pursues profit CPC does not neglect its corporate social responsibility (CSR). In addition to continuously enhancing the quality of petroleum products promoting the use of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a source of clean energy and striving for environmental protection, CPC has, regardless of cost, also ensured fuel supplies to Taiwan¡¦s remote areas and offshore islands. At the same time it has carried out social-care activities - promoting understanding of the petrochemical industry among the public, education in the safe use of petroleum and gas products, holding safety and health seminars and generally strengthening the safety culture. Our company also supports disadvantaged groups, participates in social-benefit activities and sponsors cultural events; it also works for ecological conservation, supports local cultures, promotes environmental education and stimulates local development. All of these activities conform with 21st-century trend toward corporate operations that emphasize sustainability, environmental protection and social benefit along with economic growth.
¡Kand is a champion of sustainability
In line with the global trend towards environmental protection, in late 2003 CPC initiated the following sustainable development policies to promote the spirit of sustainable development in its operations:
¡´ Conformity with government regulations and international agreements on sustainability ¡´ Clean production and environmental protection ¡´ Efficient utilization of resources to conserve water and energy ¡´ Emphasis on CSR and expansion of services to consumers ¡´ Establishment of key environmental protection indicators and information transparency ¡´ Active commitment to research and development for new areas of operation CPC joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in 2006 and has set up a Committee for the Promotion of Sustainable Development. This Committee is divided into four subcommittees¡K • Environment & Conservation • Social Consciousness • Policy and Research & Development • Environmental Accounting & Information
¡Kall of which formulate the strategies and action plans needed for attaining the ultimate goals of building a reputable corporate image and achieving sustainability. CPC has also published Sustainable Development Reports in 2007, 2009 and 2011 to fulfill its corporate social responsibility in regard to the disclosure of information.
CPC¡¦s ongoing mission
As global petroleum resources gradually decline CPC will continue to fulfill its role as Taiwan¡¦s main supplier of clean energy and will endeavor to create a win-win-win situation for environmental protection, economic development and social responsibility.
